This site, never before systematically excavated, holds a villa complex important to our understanding of the processes of c settlement in the Western Roman Empire and to the many complications that arise from post-depositional processes. Our work at the site has revealed a rich artifact assemblage dating from the 1st century C.E. through the 6th century C.E. In our first nine seasons, an intensive survey combined with geophysics and initial excavation in the pars urbana led to promising results, emphasizing the critical need for continued investigation, conservation, and interpretation of the site.
Field school students will receive instruction in surveying techniques, excavation methods, the handling and processing of artifacts, and the recording of exposed areas and features. No prior archaeological experience is necessary. Participants may attend for 2, 3, or 5 week sessions. Tuition is $1200 for 2 weeks, $1800 for 3 weeks, or $2800 for 5 weeks and includes room, board, and the cost of transportation within Portugal. The deadline for applications is May 1st, 2024. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. International students are welcome.
